Recently, METE, a laser-guided micro-missile system developed by ROKETSAN, the Turkish defense industry's production center for ammunition, missiles and rockets, conducted a new test-firing experiment. During the test, the METE missile, which was mounted on PAVO Group's Gok Alp unmanned aircraft system, hit its target with a single shot!
Subsequently, Roketsan decided to mass-produce the METE missile, announcing, "METE, the smallest guided missile member of our family, is ready for mass production!"
The company shared the latest news on its official Twitter page with a video clip of the missile system's test firing:
Turkish defense giant puts laser-guided ultra-compact missile into mass production
Roketsan is a Turkish missile producer and a well-known defense giant in the country. The company is working to develop laser-guided mini-missile systems for precision strikes, especially for urban combat.METE Such missiles will be on display for the first time at the IDEF 2019 expo in Istanbul under the name YATAGAN.
The YATAGAN missile is named after athlete Mete Gazoz, who won Turkey's first Olympic medal in archery.
The missile was initially tested in October 2021 using the Gok Alp UAS. The METE was then integrated into the BARKAN unmanned ground vehicle developed by Havelsan, which operates under Turkey's Defense and Information Sector, for the new test firing. With the success of the test, BARKAN became the first unmanned ground vehicle in Turkey capable of firing guided missiles.
According to Roketsan, the METE has a diameter of 40 millimeters, a length of 500 millimeters and a weight of about 1.2 kilograms. The missile's most distinctive feature is its semi-active laser guide, which is capable of achieving a hit accuracy of about 1 meter CEP (circular error probability) and is used to attack targets within a range of 400-1,000 meters.
METE is versatile enough to be mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles, land vehicles and sea vessels, as well as a variety of manned command and control infrastructure platforms. Its maneuverability is flexible enough to allow a single operator to easily fire the missile using a new generation 40mm grenade launcher.
Roketsan is a leading developer of missile and rocket systems. The company has developed several types of smart micro-missile systems, including the MAM-t, MAM-c and MAM-l. The MAM is a laser-guided system used to arm drones, light attack aircraft and fighter jets. the MAM-C is a high-explosive version, while the MAM-L is a warm-pressure version. The largest of these, the MAM-T, is a long-range modified version.
Other precision-guided missiles developed by Roketsan include the Karaok, a short-range anti-tank weapon; the OMTAS, a medium-range anti-tank weapon system; the L-UMTAS, a laser-guided long-range anti-tank missile system; the Cirit, a laser-guided missile; and the Tanok, a 120-mm laser-guided tank shell.
