Earth Receives Laser Data From 16 Million Kilometers Away: Farthest Laser Communication To Date

Fast Technology, Nov. 29 - The record for the farthest laser communication transmission distance to date has been created!
NASA recently said they received laser information from 16 million kilometers away in a test, a distance that is about 40 times that of the Earth to the Moon, the farthest distance transmitted by laser communications to date.

It is reported that the U.S. "Spirit Planet Mission Explorer" was launched in mid-October this year, and in the next six years, it will fly about 3.6 billion kilometers to explore one of the most mysterious asteroids in the solar system, the eponymous metal asteroid 16Psyche between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
"One of the probe's missions is the Deep Space Optical Communications Experiment, which involves testing the use of invisible near-infrared lasers to send and receive data to and from Earth.
NIR lasers are known to transmit 10-100 times faster than conventional radio transmission systems, and it will take only 50 seconds for the Psyche to reach the Earth, while it is estimated that the laser will take 20 minutes one way when the spacecraft is the furthest away from the Earth.

During this test, the Palomar Mountain Observatory in California, USA, successfully received laser data sent back from the Deep Space Optical Communication Experiment (DSOCE) equipment from 16 million kilometers away, which researchers say will pave the way for sending high-definition images of scientific information and streaming video at higher data transmission rates.
In addition, if the optical data signal can still be received continuously, the results of this experiment may also serve the future Mars exploration mission.
