Well-known Blue Laser Maker Breaks Into Medical Device Market

Recently, NUBURU, a manufacturer of high-power, high-brightness industrial blue laser technology, announced that the company has successfully won a purchase order for BlueScan solutions from Blueacre Technologies, an Irish medical device manufacturer.
Blueacre Technologies, a medical device manufacturer based in Dundalk, Ireland, will integrate the BL laser with scanning head optics to produce a versatile welding system for the manufacture of a range of precision medical devices.
The order is a natural extension of the company's focus on the electric vehicle industry, next-generation computer, consumer electronics and communications (3C) device manufacturing, and medical device markets.
The NUBURU Blue Laser addresses the need for a non-contact, low-to-zero defect, high-speed process in battery and electric vehicle manufacturing, replacing slower methods such as ultrasonic and resistance welding, which currently cost billions of dollars in equipment due to high operating costs.
It can easily process and handle copper, aluminum, titanium and stainless steel materials, facilitating the manufacture of electric vehicle (EV) batteries and solving thousands of welding problems in EVs.
Blue wavelengths of light are more readily absorbed by metals than infrared light," said David Gillen, general manager and owner of Blueacre Technology. As a result, blue light reduces the heat input to the material and lowers the risk of thermal damage to critical medical components. We are excited to add blue light lasers to our line of devices."
Brian Knaley, CEO of NUBURU, commented, "Our focus continues to be on providing world-class solutions for our customers' most challenging processes. These solutions are critical when welding different materials in delicate environments such as medical device manufacturing. According to AMPOWER 2022, Blueacre will be a world-class partner in the important market segment of medical device manufacturing, which is valued at $6 billion."
This purchase order contract from Blueacre technology, along with the $850,000 Phase II contract awarded to NASA 2 weeks ago, will provide Nuburu with bright sales results.
In recent years, Nuburu has utilized the fundamental physics and proprietary design features of blue light to achieve better speed and quality control in applications such as welding and additive manufacturing, with technology processes and solutions for industries including electric vehicles and consumer electronics.
While production of blue lasers can be traced back as far as a few decades, the transition to mass production is driving customer demand for faster, non-contact processes that don't suffer from low utilization and high maintenance costs.
In recent years, blue lasers have realized significant increases in power output and brightness. Blue lasers can be seamlessly integrated with scanning systems, bringing a combination of speed, quality and efficiency to a wide range of applications.
The NUBURU blue laser addresses the need for a non-contact, high-speed, defect-free process, forming precise and even defect-free welds about eight times faster than conventional methods.
