The University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) recently marked a significant increase in its research capabilities with the official expansion of a new 15,000-square-foot laser lab.
Leaders from across the state traveled to the campus to attend Friday's ribbon-cutting event to witness the historic moment. The new three-story facility, with more than 100 seats, significantly broadens the lab's research areas.
University President Sarah Mangelsdorf said at the ceremony, "This national research institution could not have been accomplished without the shared vision, support, commitment and partnership of all of us. We greatly appreciate the groundbreaking work being done at the LLE Lab."
Expansion Initiatives and Impact
The expansion not only makes possible the construction of the cutting-edge AMICA laser system, but also includes clean room facilities designed to advance the next generation of laser science and technology.
The $46 million expansion, which was initiated in August 2022 and has been successfully completed to date, represents another significant milestone in the development of the national research facility. The last similar expansion occurred in 2003, primarily to house the OMEGA EP laser.
The new three-story building totals 66,600 square feet and is LEED Silver certified, including 15,500 square feet of laboratory space, enough to accommodate 132 LLE employees and students. There is also 2,900 square feet of collaborative space that can accommodate an additional 117 people.
The first major addition to LLE in more than two decades includes a clean room facility to advance the next generation of laser science and technology.
The University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) has completed a $46 million expansion that began in August 2022. The expansion marks a significant milestone for the national research facility, which was last expanded in 2003 to house the OMEGA EP laser.
The new three-story building totals 66,600 square feet, is LEED Silver certified, and features 15,500 square feet of laboratory space to accommodate 132 LLE staff and students, plus 2,900 square feet of collaborative space to accommodate an additional 117 people.
The new space will support construction of the AMICA laser system, prototyping of the NSF OPAL laser, and creation of next-generation targeting, diagnostics, and optics for national security efforts.
Of particular note, the low-vibration Class 1000 cleanroom space will help LLE achieve theoretical resolution for micromachining and high-resolution instrumentation. The building also houses the largest optical coating facility of its kind, which is important to ensure that the U.S. domestic supply chain supports the work of the world's largest lasers.
At the May 31 ribbon-cutting ceremony, President Sarah Mangelsdorf emphasized, "The history of the LLE speaks volumes about the central role of our nation's leading research institutions in the development of new technologies and the positive impact of our work on the nation's economic growth."
She added, "This facility, which took two years to build - and was constructed even longer than we expected - is a very important project that will give a strong boost to LLE's research efforts in a number of areas. "
Expansion Highlights
Construction of the expansion was managed by the University of Rochester in partnership with architect CannonDesign. A total of 224,000 on-site construction hours were spent on the entire project, with a peak crew count of 91. A total of eight labor unions were involved in the construction and 30 New York State-based companies provided goods and services.
The addition was fully funded by the University, which not only increased the amount of the original grant, but also strengthened LLE's unique capabilities in the areas of specialty research, education, workforce and economic development.
Speaking at the ceremony, LLE Director Chris Deeney said, "LLE has always been at the forefront of fusion research and education, dedicated to exploring materials that can only be found under extreme conditions that typically exist only at the centers of planets and stars."
He added, "The exciting current state of LLE today and the vast prospects for the future prompted the university's decision to sponsor the construction of this new building."
