Recently, Swisscom, a major telecom operator in Switzerland, and Nokia, a leader in B2B technology innovation, announced that Swisscom has successfully completed its Next Generation Wavelength Transport Optical Network (NEWTON) across the country and has officially begun to migrate its operations to a modernized network.
In the face of high traffic growth and digital transformation, Nokia's optical networking solutions provide Switzerland's largest telecom provider with a service-centric network optimized for high performance, cost-effectiveness and a superior customer experience.
The proliferation of teleworking and learning applications, video streaming, gaming and cloud computing is driving Swisscom's goal in 2021 to enhance support for business-critical fixed and wireless traffic. The operator selected Nokia's portfolio of optical networking hardware, software and professional services for the entire transformation, which includes the rollout of 22 backbone sites and 560 metro sites.
With the deployment completed ahead of schedule, Swisscom and Nokia will now jointly manage the migration of the business to the modernized network. The new fiber optic network will transport all of Swisscom's fixed and wireless traffic from customer-provided equipment to the metro access backbone, support customer services from 1G to 400G, and efficiently aggregate and manage end-to-end traffic while maximizing the use of fiber.
The solution will address massive traffic growth by eliminating duplicate tasks, accelerating service delivery and reducing total cost of ownership. Significantly lower power consumption - a major innovation in Nokia's fiber portfolio - also contributes to Swisscom's corporate sustainability goals by reducing its carbon footprint.
The transformation of Swisscom's fiber optic network is critical to our future digitization," said Christoph Aeschlimann, CEO of Swisscom. By partnering with Nokia, we have a network that can quickly adapt to change and provide excellent service to our customers while contributing to our sustainability goals. We are excited to move into the next phase of service migration with our trusted partner Nokia."
Federico guillsamuen, president, Nokia Networks Infrastructure, said, "We are proud to be working with Swisscom to modernize its optical transport network and deliver it in record time during a period of global uncertainty. It's a service-centric showcase network that leverages automation to simplify service delivery and minimize costs, even as it scales effortlessly to support surging customer traffic demands."
Swisscom selected Nokia's portfolio of optical networking hardware, software and professional services for the entire transformation, including Nokia's Photonic Service Engine (PSE)-V-powered 1830 Series wavelength division multiplexing/optical transport network (WDM/OTN) platforms, as well as a portfolio of WaveSuite network applications.
