International laser giant Coherent 2024 fourth quarter sales exceeded expectations and hit a record high!
Recently, Coherent is announced its highest quarterly sales figures ever, thanks to the demand for optical transceivers in artificial intelligence data center applications. For the three months ended December 31, the company's revenues were $1.43 billion (equivalent to about $10.423 billion), up 27 percent year-on-year, and up 6 percent from the third quarter of 2024. After statistics, Coherent 2024 annual revenue of 5.301 billion U.S. dollars (equivalent to about 386.38 billion yuan)
The figure is higher than the guidance range provided by Coherent in November, and Coherent's shares rose 12 percent in pre-market trading after the latest announcement. In addition, Coherent's pre-tax profit turned around to $128 million from a loss of $37 million a year ago.
Coherent believes that the demand for artificial intelligence data centers has driven a 79 percent increase in datacom-related sales since last year, and more customers are now increasing their 800 Gb/s deployments, while the next-generation 1.6Tb/s products are still expected to begin volume production later this year.
While we are focused on 1.6 Tb/s growth, we are also investing and innovating for the future," said Anderson, Coherent's CEO, during an investor conference call to discuss the latest results. We are both developing 3.2 Tb/s transceivers and investing in key elemental technologies that underpin our transceiver roadmap to support all forms of optical data transmission.
In addition, Coherent's Indium Phosphide (InP) equipment production, centered at the company's large wafer fabrication facility in Sherman, Texas, tripled year-over-year in the latest quarter. This has led to rapid year-over-year growth in Coherent's 800 Gb/s transceiver products, some of which are based on EMLs and others on continuous wave (CW) lasers combined with its silicon photonic solutions.
With $33 million in chip bill funding confirmed in December, Coherent's InP capacity will continue to grow to meet the long-term sustained demand expected in the data center market.
In addition to investing heavily in laser development, including 200 Gb/s vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) and high-power CW lasers for silicon photonics, the company is committed to supporting technologies including optical lens arrays, garnet crystals, isolators, micro-optics, thermal management solutions, and a new "lightpath switch" platform for data centers," said Anderson. switch" platform for data centers. This platform has enabled us to significantly expand our data center target market, with the first customer order for this differentiated new platform received in the fourth quarter.
While AI-related transceiver sales currently dominate, Coherent's Laser division also reported a 6 percent increase in year-over-year sales, driven in part by a stronger pull from the industrial sector.
Market demand for the company's giant excimer laser systems for annealing organic LED displays was one of the main reasons, with the technology eventually moving from smartphone screens to larger applications in laptops as larger OLED factories go into production. This means a significant expansion of the total surface area of OLED screens, and Coherent's excimer lasers are a key enabler for the manufacture of high-quality OLED screens.
First sales of Coherent's new "EDGE" fiber laser platform, which was launched at the EuroBLECH trade show in Hannover, Germany in October 2024, have now been made.
Coherent's shares are currently trading just above $100 on the New York Stock Exchange, having recovered much of the value lost in the immediate aftermath of the release of the DeepSeek AI development, when the company's shares fell 20 percent.
