In the first-floor laboratory of the Beijing Laser Acceleration Innovation Center located in Huairou Science City, a burst of "bird song" comes out from time to time.
"This is the sound of the device running." Yan Xueqing, director of the center who is leading the team to do experiments and vice dean of Peking University's School of Physics, explains, "The use of chirped pulse amplification technology is like putting a super motor on the laser, which can instantly increase its power by a million times!"
Lasers have a wide range of applications in medical, industrial, communications, scientific research and many other fields. As one of the 14 cross-research platforms laid out in Huairou Science City, the Beijing Laser Acceleration Innovation Center 2024 formally completed the acceptance of processes and equipment, and all 16 experimental research platforms and seven laboratory auxiliary equipment platforms were completed and put into use.
"In May 2018, General Secretary Xi Jinping inspected our device model during his visit to Peking University, and urged everyone: 'Major scientific and technological innovations are the most important tools of the country, the most powerful tools of the country, which must be firmly grasped in one's own hands, and must rely on self-reliance and independent innovation.'
"Recalling the scene, Yan Xueqing still can't hide his excitement. Through the laboratory on the first floor, a device shaped like a space capsule attracts attention. "This is the next-generation 'laser proton knife' that will be successfully developed soon, using a point of light that is 100 times thinner than a strand of hair to propel protons to 'snipe' tumor cells at close to the speed of light." Yan Xueqing introduced, in the team undertook the "patented laser proton gas pedal device research and application demonstration" national key special projects, the equipment has realized the overall connection, completed the laser from acceleration to transmission of all the functions, to the clinical application of a big step forward. Yan Xueqing introduced, the team has made some "from 0 to 1" innovation breakthroughs, "now we have to work hard to achieve 'from 1 to 100' enhancement, to promote more results as soon as possible. "
