Laser Welding Machine Application of 2μm Laser on Cell Culture Plate

Plastic is a kind of polymer organic compound with good ductility, which has the advantages of good processability, high strength, light weight, low cost, energy saving and environmental protection, good corrosion resistance, long service life, etc. It is widely used in food, automotive, aerospace, medical, 3C, agriculture and other industries. Traditional industry has a variety of welding methods, such as hot plate welding, friction welding, ultrasonic welding, etc. These welding methods have played an important role in the development of the plastics industry in the past, but with the continuous improvement of industrial manufacturing technology requirements, the production of more precise, sensitive, compact and complex shape parts, as well as for green environmental protection needs, traditional welding methods are difficult to fully meet the needs of modern industry.

Principle of laser welding of plastics:

Two plastics are clamped together under external pressure, the laser produces a beam focused on the area to be welded, forming a thermal zone of action, the plastic absorbing the laser energy converts the light energy into heat energy, melting the contact surface of the plastic, forming a melting zone, under the action of the clamping force, the melting zone produces intermolecular mixing, and after cooling, a weld is formed, realizing transmission laser plastic welding.

Advantages of laser welding machine of plastics

  • No physical hazards such as vibration and ultrasonic waves, which can be used for high-precision component welding
  • Non-contact welding, not easy to cause surface damage, deformation
  • No need to add additional materials, no consumables, low cost
  • High welding speed, high seam strength and no residue
  • Laser beam size can be adjusted to control the size of heat affected zone and fusion zone
  • Precise and solid weld seam, no air and water leakage, good sealing performance
  • Small size of the equipment, easy to operate, low cost, easy maintenance

The emission spectrum of thulium-doped fiber laser ranges from 1.4μm-2μm, and many polymers have high absorption in these wavelength ranges, so the use of thulium-doped fiber laser does not require material modification or other IR absorption layers to enhance the absorption of laser by polymers. The 2μm thulium-doped fiber laser developed by FIBO in 2013 has a center wavelength of 1940nm and power instability of <2%. Due to the wavelength characteristics of 2μm, it has high absorption rate for most plastic materials, so it is widely used in medical, automotive, consumer electronics and other plastic welding.

Technical advantages of 2μm thulium-doped fiber laser

  •  Excellent quality: independent research and development and perfect selection of grating and other key core components
  • Superior technology: solid-state laser infrared pumping source
  • Wide wavelength coverage: output wavelength covers 1940, 1980 and other special wavelengths
  • Mature products: 5W-200W, diversified product choices
  • Support customization: compact structure, can be customized 5W-240W
  • Flexible integration: moderate size, save integration space
  • High quality welding: automatic non-contact welding, no residue

Cell culture plate laser welding process

Cell culture plate can be divided into flat bottom and round bottom (U type and V type) according to the shape of the bottom, and the number of culture holes are 6, 12, 24, 48, 96, 384, 1536, etc. This welding test is for the cell culture plate with 96 holes. In the laser power 45W, swing width 1.2mm, spiral spacing 0.1mm, swing speed 120mm / s process parameters, the weld uniform and consistent, no porosity, no overburning and other defects, the weld tearing the base material residue, high strength of the weld.
