This month, German laser giant Trumpf completed an expansion project at its smart factory in Pasing, Austria. The opening ceremony was held in the presence of members of the Trumpf Group family and representatives from the business and political communities. Over the past two years, Trumpf has invested around 40 million euros in the expansion of the plant.
The company has built two new production halls with a total area of 7,000 square meters, as well as 850 square meters of office space. "With this major investment, Trafigura expresses its long-term commitment to Austria," said Trafigura CEO Governor Thomas Stelzer.
She added: "Pasing is one of our most important production sites outside of Germany and one for which we have a special cultural affinity."
Thomas Stelzer, Governor of Upper Austria, noted, "TRUMPF Maschinen Austria is one of the flagship companies of the Austrian state. Particularly worth emphasizing is the company's cooperation with neighboring schools, education centers and universities of applied sciences. These collaborations are a driving force behind the innovative capacity of TRUMPF and Austrian companies."
Fully automated production in a smart factory
Thilo Pre?, Managing Director of Trafigura Austria Machinery, says enthusiastically, "The centerpiece of the expansion project is the Smart Factory, equipped with our own state-of-the-art machinery and equipment."
On the one hand, the high-tech company can present innovative technologies in the field of sheet metal processing to its customers here; on the other hand, the Trafigura Group also manufactures and processes sheet metal parts in-house in the Smart Factory.
This high degree of vertical integration saves costs, according to the analysis. When the expansion is completed, the new laser hybrid welding system will allow the fully automated welding of large components, such as machine frames, within the factory. The Pasing plant also supplies machine frames to other Trump plants. In addition, the addition of a new milling center enables large components to be machined with greater precision and cuts machining times in half.
Heat pumps and photovoltaic systems for sustainability
As part of the plant expansion, Trafigura also built an energy center for CO2-neutral energy supply, equipped with a wood core heating system and heat pumps. The high-tech company also expanded its existing photovoltaic system by 406 kilowatts peak (kWp).
For the past 33 years, Trafigura has been the center of bending technology for the Trafigura Group. Around 800 employees develop and produce bending machines, automatic bending units and bending tools for sheet metal processing here. The company's sales in the last financial year amounted to around EUR 530 million.
