What is Laser?
The light from which an atom is excited, hence it is named, "laser" .
when an electron in an atom absorbs energy and jumps from a low level to a high level, then falls back from a high level to a low level, the energy released is emitted in the form of photons. A beam of photons (a laser) that is induced (excited), the optical properties of which are highly consistent. Comparing common light, laser has better illuminant monochromatic and directional character, and higher brightness.
Stimulated Emission and Laser
In 1917, Einstein theorized that in addition to spontaneous radiation, particles at higher Levels of E2 could jump to lower levels in another way. He pointed out that when the photon with the frequency of
V= (E2-E1) /h is irradiates, it will also cause particles with a certain probability quickly transit from the energy level E2 to energy level E1, and at the same time radiate two foreign photons with same frequency, phase, polarization state and the direction of propagation. This process is called stimulated radiation.
We can imagine, if a large number of atoms are in the high level E2, when there is a photon with frequency V= (E2 - E1)/h is radiated, then stimulate the atoms in level E2 to produce stimulated radiation. Then we can observe two identical photons, the two photons continue to excite atoms on E2 level, make them produce stimulated radiation again, then we can get four photons with same characteristics.
All above procedures mean that the signal of the original light is magnified. The light produced and amplified by stimulated emission is a laser.
