What is a field lens?

◆ A lens that works near the focal plane of the objective lens and can effectively reduce the size of the detector is called a field lens.

◆ To be precise, the field lens should work in the image plane of the objective lens. On the one hand, the object plane of the field mirror and the main plane coincide. According to the characteristics of the main plane, the magnification of the field mirror is 1, so it makes no contribution to the magnification of the system. On the other hand, the field lens should project the aperture of the objective lens onto the entry pupil of the eyepiece, which in the case of a single lens is the exit pupil, thus ensuring that the maximum amount of outgoing light from the objective lens passes through the eyepiece.If used in a scanning system, the probe replaces the entry pupil of the eyepiece.


Field Lenses Used in Laser Scanning

◆ The main technical parameters of the field lens are: working wavelength, incident pupil, scanning range and focus spot diameter.

Operating wavelength

◆ Operating wavelength mainly depends on the wavelength of the laser, the field lens is coated at a given laser wavelength. If the field lens is not used in a given wavelength range, the field lens may be burnt out by the laser or the laser transmittance required may be very low.

Incident pupil

◆ It also called maximum incident spot. If a monolithic mirror is used and the reflection mirror is placed where the incident pupil is, the maximum available beam diameter is equal to the diameter of the incident pupil. The larger the incident pupil, the smaller the focusing spot diameter through the focusing lens. Therefore, when the marking is particularly delicate, we will consider using the field lens with a larger incident light pupil, such as fine marking and vibrating lens welding.

Scanning range

◆ The wider the scope can be scanned by the field mirror, the more welcome it will be for users. However, if the scanning range is increased, the focal point becomes larger and the distortion is also increased. In addition, if the scanning range was enlarged, the focal length and working distance of the field lens would also be enlarged.The lengthening of working distance inevitably leads to the loss of laser energy. And the focal spot diameter is proportional to the focal length, which means that if the scanning range is increased, the focal spot diameter will be increased. If the spot is not fine enough, the power density of the laser drops very fast (the power density is inversely proportional to the 2 times of the spot diameter), which is not conducive to processing. Therefore, users should choose the most suitable field lenses according to different processing areas, or reserve several field lenses with different scanning ranges.

Focal length

◆ It has certain relation with working distance, but does not equal to working distance. 

Focusing spot diameter

◆ For the scanning system with incident laser beam diameter D, field lens focal length F and beam quality factor Q, focusing spot diameter D = 13.5qf /D (mm). So the beam enlargement mirror can get a smaller focal spot.
