According to the cooling mode, the laser can be simply divided into conduction cooling, forced air cooling and forced water cooling.
Conducted cooling is generally suitable for lasers with low power. The main heating element is placed on the bottom of the structure and the heat is dissipated through the external materials. For example, ultra-fast laser seed source or radar light source usually adopt this heat dissipation method.
Forced air cooling is mainly applied to lasers within 1000W. The heat inside the laser is taken away by the air duct and fan of the cooling profile. The air-cooled laser is more susceptible to the influence of the ambient temperature.
High power continuous lasers above 1 kilowatt generally use forced water cooling. Generally, the cooling water flow rate corresponding to the 1kW fiber laser is roughly 6 to 8 liters per minute, and the cooling water flow rate of the QBH output head is about 2 liters per minute. The temperature of forced water cooling generally fluctuates from 0.5 to 2 degrees. If 976nm pump source is used, this fluctuation will affect the stability of the output power of the laser, which is one of the reasons why 915nm is mainly used in industrial lasers.
In order to adapt to various working environments, the laser also needs to consider dust proof, water proof and salt spray prevention in structural design. For ordinary fiber lasers, dust prevention is a basic requirement, but if fans and air ducts are not cleaned for a long time, they will also lead to dust accumulation and poor heat dissipation. For water-cooled lasers, in order to prevent condensation, air-tight design must be done. Some lasers internally use desiccant to remove moisture in the air. If the laser works on the vibrating platform, it is required to be strengthened in the internal and external structure design, and some installation details such as screw fixation will also have higher requirements.
