What Is Fiber Laser?

Fiber laser, also fiber optical laser, refers to the laser source adopts glass fiber doped with some element of rare earth as the gain medium.

◆ Good beam quality

The wave guide structure of the optical fiber determines that the (optical) fiber laser is easy to obtain the single transverse mode output, and has little influence by the external factors, and can achieve the high brightness laser output.

◆ High efficiency

Optical fiber laser can achieve high photon-to-light conversion efficiency by selecting the semiconductor laser with matching emission wavelength and absorption characteristics of doped rare earth elements as the pump source.

The overall electro-optical efficiency of commercial fiber laser is up to 25%, which is beneficial to reduce cost and save energy and environmental protection.

◆ Good heat dissipation characteristics

Fiber laser uses thin and long fiber doped with rare earth element as laser gain medium, its surface area to volume ratio is very large. It is about 1000 times of solid laser and has natural advantages in heat dissipation capacity. In the case of medium and low power, there is no need for special cooling of optical fiber. And in the case of high power, water cooling is used for heat dissipation, which can also effectively avoid the beam quality and efficiency decline caused by heat effect commonly seen in solid state lasers.
