Laser Welding Application

◆ Copper and copper alloys

Welding copper and copper alloy is easy to produce the problem of not fusion and penetration, so the energy concentration, high power heat source and with preheating measures should be adopted. When the thickness of the workpiece is thin or the structural stiffness is small and there is no deformation prevention measure, it is easy to produce large deformation after welding; and when the welded joint is subject to large rigid constraints, it is easy to produce welding stress. It is also easy to produce hot crack when welding copper and copper alloy. Gas hole is a common defect in copper and copper alloy welding.

◆ Plastic

Laser welding can be used for almost all thermoplastics and thermoplastic elastomers. The commonly used welding materials are PP, PS, PC, ABS, polyamide, PMMA, polyformaldehyde, PET and PBT. And as for some other engineering plastics such as polyphenylene sulfide PPS and liquid crystal polymer, because of their low laser transmittance, they can not be directly used laser welding technology. Generally in the bottom material black carbon will be added, so that the material can absorb enough energy, so as to meet the requirements of laser transmission welding.

◆ Laser welding aluminum alloy

The main difficulty in laser welding aluminum is its high reflectivity to 10. 8 PON wavelength CO2 laser beam. Aluminum is a good conductor of heat and electricity. The high density of free electrons makes it a good reflector of light. The initial surface reflectivity exceeds 90%, that is to say, deep welding must start at a input energy below 10% of one thousand.

 

◆ Laser welding magnesium alloy

The density of Mg alloy is 36% lower than that of Al, and it is concerned as a high specific strength material. For the AZ31B-H244 alloy (3.27%Al, 0.79%Zn) with a plate thickness of 1.8MM, the optimal welding conditions are the average power of 0.8kW, 5ms, 120Hz, 300mm/s, and the focus size of 0. 42mm. The continuous C02 laser welding has obtained a good penetration weld.

◆ Low alloy high strength steel

In laser welding of low alloy high strength steels, a joint with similar mechanical properties to the base metal can be obtained as long as the welding parameters are selected appropriately. HY-130 steel is a typical low alloy high strength steel after tempering treatment. It has high strength and high crack resistance. The weld seam and HAZ microstructure are a combination of coarse grain, partial fine grain and original microstructure by conventional welding. The toughness and cracking property of the joint are much worse than that of the base metal. Moreover, the weld and HAZ microstructure are particularly sensitive to cold cracks under welding condition.
