Levels of Laser Safety

Laser is divided into four safety levels. Different levels may do harm to the human body differently, therefore the laser protection standards are also different.

1. Safety level - Level 1

Laser power less than 0.5 milliwatts is safe laser.

Laser level 1 in normal use conditions will not harm human health, but these products still need to ensure the design be taken to prevent workers from entering the laser radiation area during the process of work.

2. Safety level - Level 2

Laser power equals 1 milliwatt.

The laser of this grade has low power and visible laser. Humans can protect themselves by blinking and reflecting the strong light with their eyes. But too long-time looking straightly at laser beam will bring danger to eyes, Level-2 has to be post warning signs in the laser light port.

3. Safety level - Level 3

Level 3 laser has two types: 3a and 3b. The laser power ranges from 1 milliwatt to 5 milliwatt.

Class 3a laser is as Level 2 laser, the light outlet part need to be post a warning sign. If it is only seen for a short time, the human eye will protect the light reflection to a certain extent, but if the light spot is focused into the human eye, it will cause harm to it.

Class 3b laser, the laser power ranges from 5 milliwatts to 500 milliwatts. Damages to eyes may happen if one views directly or diffuse reflection occurs. Class 3b laser usually carries a "hazard" label. Although they are harmful to the eyes, if the light spot is not focused, the risk of fire or burning the skin is small. It is recommended to wear eye protective goggles when using this class of laser. 

4. Safety Level - Level 4

The laser power is more than 500 milliwatts, this level of laser will do great harm to eyes and skins. Direct reflection and diffuse reflection will cause damage. All Level 4 laser equipment must carry a "hazard" label. Level 4 lasers can also damage materials near the laser and ignite combustible materials, and require the same eye protection as Level 3b lasers.
