A Brief Comparison between CW Fiber Laser and Pulsed Fiber Laser

At present, 2 types of fiber lasers, continuous-wave (CW) fiber laser and pulsed fiber laser, have occupied the market for macro material processing and precise material processing.

A CW laser, aka continuous laser, as its name and the figure suggest, the laser beam continuously acts on the surface of the object, therefore the heat will constantly accumulate on the surface and make the surface temperature rise up very high at a short time. For example, when cleaning paint on a boat by a 3000W CW laser, the surface temperature will rise up to 376℃ in a few seconds.

If the object is small and thin, it may get deformation after processing by a CW laser. CW fiber laser will be a good choice to be applied on some large steel structures, pipes, etc., because they have large volume, fast heat dissipation, and low requirement for substrate damage. Therefore, CW laser is often applied on cleaning bridge, construction frame, car/truck frame, car door, bench, and some city facilities.

A pulse fiber laser irradiates the surface of the object with a discontinuous pulsed laser beam of a certain frequency. It has a much higher peak output power, which enables it to quickly vaporize the stains on the surface at a short time (nanosecond-grade). And because it is discontinuous, no more heat will be accumulated on the surface and no damage to the base material. Therefore, pulse laser is often applied on cleaning molds, auto parts, kitchen wares, instruments, antiques etc., to attain a precise cleaning effect.
